Gaze (and Dread) Upon This Stunning Lovecraft Art
Eldritch repugnance never looked thusly good…
Stephen King once called H.P. Lovecraft "the twentieth century's greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale." This seems like a fair word form, seeing as how the man pretty much created the Cosmic Horror genre. Lovecraft's stories have been inspiring revulsion artists for the improved parting of a century, but a recent challenge to art students has resulted in what is rather possibly one of the top-quality collections supported the Isle of Man's writings.
Jon Schindehette, one of the creative art directors for Wizards of the Coast, lately issued the following challenge to art students at the Rhode Island School of Design:
Create a fauna based upon a not-humanoid critter from H.P. Lovecraft's literature. The beast should give a amply single-minded form, convey motion where appropriate, and be believable. Creature can be shown atomic number 3 either 3/4 prospect or 'turn-arounds'.
Schindehette has now posted some truly wondrous results on his blog, complete with commentary from various art directors and illustrators who specialize in this style of work. The image on presentation here is Craig J Spearing's "Shoggoth", and I highlighting recommend heading complete to the web log itself and checking out the whole selection on display.
